The Journey’s Program
Sumac Elementary School…
By: Sheri Karp
is offering a new program for the PRE-kindergartners.
This is for our pre Willow and Yerba Buena children. It
is for the children that are on the age cusp for kindergarten, a bit too
young for kindergarten and a bit too old for pre-school, they turn 5 between
July 1-Dec.1st. Sumac and Lupin Hill had the program last year and it
has now been added to White Oak Elementary in Westlake.
It is scheduled from 8:00-1:00 M-F and they are preparing them for kindergarten rather than another year of pre-school. Last year was the first year and the parents
are raving about the program. After a year in the Journey’s program, most
students will enter traditional Kindergarten although some may be eligible
for 1st grade. It is open to all Las Virgenes families. It is just another
way our schools are working to better the education program. Hats off to
Las Virgenes Schools.

Make Be-Leaves in Agoura Hills
Local Agoura Hills plant business booming
By: Sheri Karp
This Agoura Hills company specializes in manufacturing custom artificial trees. Although it may sound strange, Make Be-Leaves is a strong business that sells artificial trees, palm trees, silk plants, silk floral arrangements and plantscapes for commercial interior use. This national preferred supplier for hotels and restaurants is headed by founder, Susie Ameche. Ameche started her business from her own home and slowly expanded into an Agoura Hills office. The small business is increasingly popular as commercial interior designers opt for low maintenance, green options.

Basic Upgrades to Sell Your Home
Who are “they” you ask? They are the buyers. The #1 upgrades that “they”
want.
By: Sheri Karp
If you are living in a home that still has cottage cheese ceilings then get
rid of it! Yes, it is messy. Yes, you might have to leave the house for
a few days. Yes, I know that you have lived with it for all these years and
you are okay with it. And Yes, the buyer could do it when you move out.
BUT they won’t buy your home….not unless the price reflects it 10 times
over! The cottage cheese ceilings age your home. Buyer’s don’t comment
when you don’t have it but when you do, they have a lot to say.
And PINK. I hear buyer’s saying, “all these Morrison Ranch homes are pink,
what’s that about?” So if you have an opportunity to take your home out of
the 80’s then that’s the next step. What are the “newest” neutrals, you
ask. The experts are saying, taupe’s and grays and golds.
And gold. The buyer’s do not like gold (yes, they liked it in paint but not
on the metals). They want all the fixtures and fittings in our homes to be
silver or black or nickel. You can have all the gold dipped, I hear.
Now saying all this, I worry that next year I will be putting out a
newsletter saying that PINK is the new neutral and gold fixtures are
back! I can bet on it though that cottage cheese ceilings are not coming
back!

Lindero Canyon Middle School Renovation
Phase I Completed
By: Sheri Karp

Lindero Canyon Middle School
Lindero Canyon Middle School is completing phase I of a $30million capital construction project. Phase I is schedule to be completed by June 2010. The New Media Center and Science Building is underway as well as a new administration building. There’s a disproportionate investment into the science classrooms and the media centers, intentionally. The classrooms are a bit bigger than before but they are fairly vanilla. The 2 story building housing the state of the art science classrooms along with dozens of new classrooms and an exceptional library media center.
The construction project is scheduled to be completed in 2011. The Lindero Canyon Middle School campus was the last school in Las Virgenes that hasn’t been renovated. It is a 40 year old campus and was in dire need of expansions and renovation. They have been an award winning school before these renovations now there will be a new sense of pride from parents, teachers and students.

Agoura Hills Hurdler Strives
Jonathan Cabral goes after his goals

Jonathan Cabral (Courtesy of the Acorn)
By: Sheri Karp
The Agoura Hills track and field hurdler recently ran the 3rd fastest time in the nation for the 300 hurdles with a time of 36.83 seconds. On March 4th, Jonathan Cabral also set his personal best in 110 hurdles in 13.81 seconds, which is also a top 10 national mark.
The 6-3, 180 pound hurdler is built perfectly for the sport, but his technique is superb. “Every day I get my technique better, slowly by slowly,” says Cabral. “It’s kind of cool but I don’t let it get to me.”
Despite his lax attitude, Cabral aims to obtain a world record the end of his senior year. He then plans to attend the London Olympics in 2012. Keep your eye on this star, he is doing big things.

Agoura’s Farmers Market to Allow Music
Since it’s genesis in August, 2009, the Agoura Hills farmers market in the Agoura Hills City Mall has been a hit. Every Sunday from 9am to 2pm, the market pulls in the community to help support local farmers. The idea is fabulous and the community has thoroughly embraced it.
Recently, however, musicians with amplifies will be allowed to perform at the weekly farmers market. Although no stage is permitted, they are allowing a signer and 2 other musicians to accompany. Given the music is not disruptive, this idea could add a complimentary element to the community farmers market. Look for a change next week when you head over to grab your fresh vegetables.
